The Orton-Gillingham Approach is an instructional method intended primarily for use with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing of the sort associated with dyslexia. The method focuses primarily on decoding and encoding strategies and preliteracy skills.

The Orton Gillingham Approach focuses upon the learning needs of the individual student. Students with reading difficulties need to master the same basic knowledge about language and its relationship to our writing system as any who seek to become competent readers and writers. However, because of their disability, they need more help than most people in sorting, recognizing, and organizing the raw materials of language for thinking and use. The Orton Gillingham Approach uses direct and systematic teaching to aid these individuals in acquiring the necessary language skills to become skilled readers.
